The 15 Most Powerful ANIME Characters Of All Time

Home / Blog / The 15 Most Powerful ANIME Characters Of All Time

The wonderful world of anime has presented us with levels of power that we probably would not have been able to imagine by ourselves. Most of us would consider someone who could punch through a brick wall to be extremely strong. After watching a bit of anime, however, our standards for measuring strength are raised high enough that we expect our idols of power to be able to destroy the moon from a million miles away with minimal effort, or at least swing their enemies into mountains that collapse upon impact. In a way, we’re spoiled by the power levels of our favourite anime characters. Everything else seems so wimpy in comparison. If ever we did see someone punch their way through a brick wall, we would probably yawn right in their face.

With so many powerful characters to choose from, it’s hard to figure out where to rank them in a list. But we did so, after several months spent thinking about it in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Oh yes indeed, this list is ranked, folks; weakest at 15, going up in strength till we get to the strongest, at numero uno. We understand that doing so will set us up for a cloud of hate mail pigeons blocking out our front yard sun, but we’re ready for it. The facts speak for themselves, meaning of course that our subjective opinion here is objective fact! Read on to find out how your favourite anime characters stack up in terms of sheer power.

15. Naruto

Naruto Uzumaki is a ninja (or shinobi) and the main protagonist of the beloved Naruto manga and anime. While his personality tends to paint him in a boisterous, headstrong, somewhat immature light, Naruto’s power and abilities are certainly not to be taken lightly. His chakra is extremely high and grants him powers of great longevity and healing power in battle, as well as high levels of stamina and vitality. He is also adept at using his trademark Shadow Clone Technique, which is much like the traditional clone technique that we’re used to seeing from fictional ninjas. In Naruto’s case, however, the clones are actually physical, and can engage in combat with Naruto’s enemies. Aside from being a ninja well-versed in the arts of stealth and combat, Naruto’s mastery over his chakra should not be underestimated, as it gives him the strength to triumph over a wide variety of opponents.

14. Guts

Guts, or Gatts, is the main man in the Berserk series. Former raid unit leader of mercenary organization Band of the Hawk, Guts is a master swordsman with absolutely immense strength, speed and durability. With his mighty blade, the Dragonslayer, Guts can swing right through armoured knights and their horses as though they were made of softened butter. The Dragonslayer is certainly not the only handy piece of equipment he carries: his mechanical arm also shoots cannons, and can be equipped with a crossbow to fire arrows; he uses miniature bombs and throwing knives; and he protects himself with the Berserker Armor, which easily deflects the blows of all enemies who manage to break past his ranging. Guts sums up his life’s intent and purpose in this quote: “You should feel the pain we feel and understand. I am the messenger that will deliver you to that pain and understanding.”

13. Lucy

One of the most nightmarish antiheroes/antivillains in all of anime, Lucy possesses an insane amount of power. She is a Diclonius with the ability to produce and control vectors, which are invisible telekinetic arms that can slash through several types of matter with perfect ease. We see the hint of her potential at the beginning of Elfen Lied, when her vectors slash right through the bodies of four of her bullies at school after they murder her dog. As we see throughout the series, Lucy’s killing prowess works in tandem with her willingness to murder anyone who rubs her the wrong way, or if she simply needs something from them and doesn’t feel like asking. Her power grew and grew as the series progressed, and her vectors evolved with her. By the end of the manga, her vectors could reach into any point in the world, and Lucy was easily strong enough to destroy the entire planet.

12. Light Yagami

Ever wish you can just write down the name of someone, and have them sent off to the next world? We hope not, because that would make you a sick psychopathic bastard. That kind of murderous power does not belong in the real world, but we totally dig it in fiction. Light Yagami, of Death Note, needs only primary school writing skills, a pencil, and a piece of paper to kill any foe he faces. Any foe at all. Sure, it helps that he’s an actual genius with a wildly high intellect, as he can probably figure out a way past the obstacles in a fight with a character fast enough to stop him from writing their name down, but really, that’s just icing on the cake. A total buffoon with Light’s power can go on a serious murderous rampage for a long time before being stopped. Such a power makes Light hard to place on this list, since other characters (re: mostly Dragon Ball characters) have the speed and strength to put Light down before he can even put his hand to the paper. Right about here is probably the best place to stick him.

11. Alucard

Alucard’s name spelled backwards is Dracula, which is no coincidence, since the character was written to actually be the very same Count Dracula that Bram Stoker wrote years and years ago. Now, he is reborn with an anime twist. Alucard has super speed, strength, stamina, durability, accuracy, and senses. He can cause illusions in the minds of his opponents, rendering them mad while he decimates them entirely. He won’t even have to resort to that, though, since he can destroy completely straight-minded foes through his shapeshifting abilities (which allow him to transform in part or in whole into any shape he chooses, which includes hellish animals of all sorts) and his mastery of weapons that has come from centuries of combat experience. If you do manage to land a hit on Alucard, you’ll be saddened to realize that he is completely incorporeal, meaning that his true form is a non-physical shadow.

10. Vegeta

9. Goku

What’s a list of powerful anime characters without our hero and friend, mister Son Goku? If we didn’t fit him into an entry here, we might have had a sweaty bevy of howling weeaboos parading our door, waving invisible kamehamehas at our silhouette in the window. Avoiding all that, keeping things honest at all times, we include Goku among the very strongest of anime characters. In fact, Goku is one of the most powerful fighters in fiction, period. His feats of physical strength and speed, along with his ability to generate horrifying, gleaming beams of light from his body at will make him one heck of a bastard to face in a fight to the death. No need to fret, though — if you are of sound heart, then Goku is your friend, and he will never harm a hair on your body. However, if you’re consumed by the drive to harm others, and your actions manifest the evil intentions in your putrid little heart, then Goku will come for you. And he will f*** you up.

8. Beerus

It’s starting to get a little Dragon Ball-heavy in here, isn’t it? Well, don’t blame us — we’re just calling it like we see it. Blame sensei Akira Toriyama (and do so with respect) for writing some seriously overpowered characters and cramming them all into the same universe. The miraculous, unexpected existence of Dragon Ball Super brought about a whole new roster of characters that put Goku and Vegeta to absolute shame when it comes to power levels. Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7, is a lazy, playful, catlike god, but he has the power to obliterate vast expanses of space and matter at will. That’s in his job title, after all. A fully powered Super Saiyan 3 Goku was knocked out flat by a single kick from Beerus. Even when Goku ascended to Super Saiyan God form, he was no match for the God of Destruction. We’re sure that Goku will pass Beerus’ strength eventually as Dragon Ball Super progresses, but right now he is Beerus’s b*tch, as are most other characters in the anime universe.

7. Whis

In Dragon Ball Super, Whis is the baby sitter — erm, attendant, of Lord Beerus. He’s also the one who taught him martial arts, which is certainly saying a lot. The first glimpse we saw of Whis’ strength was when he knocked Beerus out cold with a single strike to the neck. Up until that point, we viewers were still awestruck by Beerus’ sheer dominance over Super Saiyan God Goku, but Whis made us quickly realize that there is a vast spectrum of power yet to be explored in the Dragon Ball universe. In training Goku and Vegeta, he takes them both on at the same time and completely exerts them without expending a fraction of his energy. Sensei Akira Toriyama himself said that, when it comes to power ratings in Dragon Ball Super, Super Saiyan God Goku would be a 6, Beerus would be a 10, and Whis would be a 15. However, he’s still far from being the strongest character in the series.

6. Vados

That’s right, Whis’ sister is possibly even stronger than he is. Vados attends and teaches martial arts to Champa, the God of Destruction of Universe 6. The pair are a sort of mirror for Whis and Beerus in Universe 7 — though Champa and Beerus are quite different in demeanor and appearance, while Vados and Whis seem to be pretty similar to each other, except for the fact that there might be a power difference between the two. Vados actually trained Whis in martial arts, and has stated herself that she is “a little bit stronger” than him, though Whis quickly retorted that she has not trained him in the past 1000 years. Regardless, Vados possesses unfathomable power — she also knocked out her respective God of Destruction with one blow to the neck, and has displayed the ability to destroy a whole planet a great distance away by lightly tapping her staff.

5. The Grand Priest

Let’s have another Dragon Ball feature here, shall we? Once again, don’t mail your angry letters to us for including so many Dragon Ball characters on this list; please direct them to sensei Akira Toriyama for creating such OP figures. Out of all the “angels” in Dragon Ball Super, like Whis and Vados, the Grand Priest is by far the most powerful. We have not seen the true extent of his abilities, as he has not yet been shown in a fight. However, the Grand Priest is said to be among the top 5 fighters in the Dragon Ball multiverse, and Whis himself stated that his power is absolutely no match for the Grand Priest, and he wouldn’t even be able to touch him if they fought. With these insane power levels shown in Dragon Ball Super, it seems as though we’ve come a long, long way since Raditz and Nappa were considered threats. However, there are 4 other entries on this list that take the concept of power to a whole new level.

4. Saitama

The One-Punch Man gets the number three spot on this list. The simple fact is that, like Superman, Saitama’s writers disrespected all rules of balance when they created him. Put simply, he’s just broken. It doesn’t matter what special abilities the other characters on this list have, it doesn’t matter how much training they did to prepare themselves before the fight. One punch from Mr. Saitama, and they’re instantly dead. To make him seem even more overpowered, it’s been stated in the show that Saitama has a vast well of untapped potential, and all his fights show him using only a fraction of his strength. Where does a fighter who can end every opponent with one blow progress to? What kind of powers will he have once his strength climaxes? Whatever that might look like, we bet it still would not come close to the top three characters on this list.

3. Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon, in her ultimate form, is way, way stronger than Goku, and almost everyone else in the Dragon Ball universe. She’s even stronger than Saitama himself, if only because her creators wrote her to be divine, while One Punch Man’s creators wrote Saitama to just be completely broken. As Sailor Cosmos, not only does she possess imaginably high exponents of superhuman speed, strength, and durability, but she can break and warp spacetime itself and manipulate the fabric of reality. Her powers of magic, as well, are nearly limitless. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but out of the two heroes of the most popular 90’s anime series, Sailor Moon beats Goku right down to the ground every single time. Their fight might be an entertaining watch for a while, spanning several galaxies over several minutes or maybe an hour or two, but it will surely end in Goku’s demise. Don’t worry, though — Sailor Moon would bring him back to life, because she can do that as well.

2. Lain

To all the men reading this article, don’t feel emasculated by the fact that all of your anime heroes are far outclassed by a 14 year old girl. They just have no shot at winning here. While they’re all extraordinarily powerful, Lain is basically God, and can erase each of them in literally no time at all. She can do pretty much anything else, too. She is omniscient (knows everything in the universe), possess omnipresent speed (she exists everywhere simultaneously within both the virtual and physical worlds), and has limitless strength and durability, since she can warp reality in any way she chooses. Basically, Lain can legitimately pull a rabbit out of a hat, and perform literally every conceivable and non-conceivable task that does not include pulling a rabbit out of a hat. God, folks — here she is. But, although she can destroy the universe with a thought, she has no experience in doing so, unlike our number one entry here.

1. Zen-Oh

As strong as the Dragon Ball Super angels are; as broken as Saitama is; as divine as Sailor Moon is; they’re all frail, withered leaves hanging for dear life onto a dead branch compared to this guy right here. Lain is the only one who can even bark up his tree, except her omni-power is limited to one universe, whereas Zen-Oh’s powers are multi-universal. Zen-Oh is, by several leaps and bounds, the most powerful character on here. Seriously, it’s not even close. The king of the 12 universes, Zen-Oh looks like a small, noseless child with a lemon-shaped head and an extremely high voice. However, his power level should by no means be judged by his appearance and demeanor. The true extent of Zen-Oh’s capabilities is unknown, and Beerus has said in the show that he does not fight. But his power is apparently completely boundless. He can wipe out absolutely anything in the blink of an eye, from a single ant to entire universes. If he was so inclined, he can do away with the concept of existence as a whole in literally no time at all. There were once 18 universes in the Dragon Ball world, but Zen-Oh destroyed 6 of them one time because he was in a bad mood. He is, by far, the most powerful anime character of all time.
